Top 5 Iconic Horror Movie Villains of All Time
Halloween is just around the corner and that means it’s just the right time to watch some horror movies. Films that scare us, frighten us and leave us wanting more. They keep us up at night, remind us to lock our doors and secure our windows and to never fall asleep alone. These are the horror movie villains we know all too well because of their status to keep us awake at night. Let’s begin.
Horror Movie Villains #5 – John Kramer (The Jigsaw Killer)
Imagine waking up and not knowing where you are. You’re in a room confused and wondering what is about to happen. A television turns on or perhaps a tape recorder is near you and you hear the voice of John Kramer. You’re in a trap and you only have minutes if not seconds to survive. Jigsaw is a man of extreme patience and will test you like no other. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, only what you do next to ensure your survival. The game he plays will surely shed blood and although he hasn’t killed anyone personally, you don’t want your name to appear on his list. He may have cancer but his message is clear – the game must be played, the rules will be adhered to; live or die, it’s your choice.
Horror Movie Villains #4 – Leatherface
What do you get when you see a massive figure wielding a chainsaw and wearing a mask made from human flesh? Well, you better hope you have a good head start. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre terrified audience upon its first release and horror was never the same. The sequels/remakes never matched the terror of the original which introduced a hulking killer who wields a mechanical weapon. He’s fast, good with a sewing kit and in some ways a victim of his disturbed family which dominates him. Leatherface could’ve been a nice man if not for the family in Texas who’s cruel and barbaric ways shaped him into the grisly killer we remember him as. The chainsaw is revving up so you better get to running!
Horror Movie Villains #3 – Freddy Krueger
You can forget about sleeping because this character literally haunts you and hunts you in your dreams! Wes Craven’s most iconic story is the man that made Elm Street a household name. With his red and green sweater and that memorable glove. Sometimes he may throw in a joke or two, but when it comes to Freddy, there’s no joking around. Does everyone remember that song that we all used to sing as kids? Try to stay awake because as soon as you close your eyes, Freddy has you in his hands.
#2 Michael Myers
Halloween will never be the same ever since Michael came home to Haddonfield. We may never know why Michael has a thirst for blood, but he will never stop no matter what you do. In fact, I never look at a butcher knife the same after watching Halloween and I wonder if you do as well. His slow-paced walking, that head tilt combined with the heaving breathing, Michael is an unstoppable killing machine whose never uttered a single word. What’s going on in that mind of his? We may never know and yet after all this time we’ve been so scared of that mask which is just a white painted mold of William Shatner’s face. Who knew such a blank expression could terrify movie-goers for the past forty years!
#1 Jason Voorhees
I used to love camping in the woods, but now I’m wondering if Jason isn’t far behind. The Camp Crystal Lake Killer looms large with whatever he can get his hands on (the machete is his favorite). His sheer size, inability for him to die and that hockey mask has secured Jason as the most memorable and iconic of all horror movie villains.
He’s inhumanly powerful and much like Michael, never speaks a word. We know why he kills, but nothing will stop him. Not even leaving the camp grounds or slaughtering more youngsters in space, wherever Jason is the body count will surely be high. You can run, you can hide, you can shoot him, drown him, burn him and even freeze him; but Jason will never die. So, turn off the lights and prepare yourself for the hockey mask wearing killer who just wants to celebrate Friday the 13th the best way possible…having some fun with those camp counselors!
