Top 5 John McClane Moments from Die Hard!
He’s the guy who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. A fly in the ointment, a monkey in the wrench, a pain in the ass, but the only man who can get the job done. John McClane is the NYPD cop who forever changed action cinema with Die Hard, one of the best action movies ever made! With five films in total, let’s look at the best moments that McClane has gone through in this adrenaline filled action franchise!
#5 – Car vs. Helicopter
Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4.0 in Europe) was the first to not receive the R-rating but still offered a good time nonetheless. While protecting a computer hacker, the bad guys show up in a helicopter and chase McClane who’s fleeing in a cop car. When he runs out of bullets and has nowhere to go, McClane decides to get a little rough. Driving the police car through a toll-booth checkpoint, the car takes out the helicopter while McClane gleefully laughs at his success.
#4 – Ejector Seat!
Die Hard 2 is largely overlooked, but is still a well-made action movie. Fighting against terrorists that seize control of Dulles International Airport, McClane gets caught by the terrorists who catch him in a plane. Instead of shooting him dead they toss several grenades into the plane! McClane jumps into the ejector seat and pulls the lever just in time to save himself from a fiery death. Although, the fuse on those grenades are a bit long, it’s still an intense moment and seeing McClane survive the explosion does bring some laughs too.
#3 – Freeway Pursuit!
Simon wants to play a game and McClane is forced to play along in Die Hard with a Vengeance, the most entertaining Die Hard of the franchise! Zeus and McClane are being pursued by Simon’s goons who are shooting at them! McClane takes the wheel and performs one heck of a stunt to get the bad guys off their tail. It’s aggressive, badass and most of all, memorable!
#2 – Plastic Explosives down the elevator shaft!
Visiting his wife on holiday, John McClane manages to escape the Christmas party when armed gunmen storm the Nakatomi Tower! Once the police arrive, they send in an armored vehicle which Hans and his team are ready for. They shoot a missile at the vehicle which catches fire. McClane retaliates and sends some plastic explosives down an elevator shaft to eliminate the bad guys who are causing problems. The building may not be on fire, but it could use a paint job and perhaps some screen doors!
#1 – Not going up on a tall building again!
John McClane (Die Hard) discovers that the roof of Nakatomi Tower is rigged to blow and the hostages are waiting for helicopter transport! He manages to get the hostages off the roof while looking for his wife. Hans discovers that his plan is going downhill and presses the button to blow the roof. It doesn’t work at first but McClane has time to tie a fire hose around his waist and jump off the building just as it detonates! This is the build-up that gets our heart racing, our blood pumping and has us cheer once it happens. How can anyone forget an explosion like that?
