Top 5 Must Watch New Shows On HBO (Now That Game Of Thrones Is Over)

Posted on June 10, 2019

Now that Game of Thronesis over, what’s next?

Many of us were obsessed with Game of Thrones. It was the best show on television and now that the series finale has aired, we’re left feeling empty and wondering what to watch. How are we to fill this void?

Well, let’s take a look at some of what HBO has coming out and see if anything can match the majesty of Game of Thrones.

Watchmen

Based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel, Watchmen is about an alternate history where superheroes have become the outlaws of society. This could be really, really good, but it could also be too weird for some viewers considering the show is being produced by Damon Lindelof, known for Lost and The Leftovers.

The graphic novel has a dark and gritty feel that, hopefully, the show is able to reproduce. If it does, this could very well be your next big obsession.

Westworld

Westworld may be the ticket. Based on Michael Crichton’s movie by the same name from the 70s, Westworld is about a futuristic amusement park set in the wild west featuring robotic “hosts” that act like real people. Visitors are allowed to live out their craziest fantasies, including those involving cruelty and murder, without consequence.

It’s a crazy ride, with some great characters. It’s violent like Game of Thrones and has some similarities. It remains to be seen, however, if the show will continue the quality it has produced so far.

Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies is the least like Game of Thrones show on this list. It’s not fantasy or science fiction in any way, but it does have a certain darkness fans may love.

Featuring a powerhouse of female actors, it is about three mothers with seemingly perfect lives who find themselves caught up in murder.

Deadwood Movie

Deadwood has become something of a cult classic and fans have long awaited this movie project. The series has a very unique style, with dialogue that, along with a plethora of swearing, has a poetic sense to it.

Hopefully, we can expect more of the same from the movie, but, again, this is only a movie and not the engrossing series we need to fill the Game of Thrones void.

Chernobyl

HBO clearly wants us to like this miniseries. It premiered right after Game of Thrones. It is about the meltdown of the nuclear power plant known as Chernobyl in Pripyat, Russia in the 1970s and the resulting fallout, both in terms of radiation spreading across the country and in terms of the politics involved.

Stylistically, it is shot like a horror movie, with many harrowing scenes involving people entering dangerous places saturated with radiation, some knowing the radiation will eventually kill them and others cluelessly making cringe-worthy decisions.

It’s well worth watching, but as a miniseries with only a few episodes, it’s not going to fill the Game of Thrones gap.
