2. Serena Burns Down the Waterford House

Top 5 Times Season 3 Of The Handmaid’s Tale Made Your Jaw Drop (So Far)

Posted on June 17, 2019

**Season 3 Spoilers Ahead**

Blessed Be the Fruit, May the Lord Open. I never thought I would love hearing those words as much as I do now that I’ve become officially obsessed with the Handmaid’s Tale. I successfully binged the first two seasons and was left yearning for so many answers regarding the second season finale. Waking up to see that the first three episodes of season 3 had dropped on Hulu made my heart flutter with excitement, and you can bet that I jumped straight into beginning the latest season of one of my favorite shows. Since there currently are only three episodes released, these moments will be limited to those episodes. But worry not, I will continue this far into the remainder of the season!

#5 – June Recruits More Marthas For The Resistance

Commander Lawrence has some redemptive moments, but he also proves himself to be a pompous, arrogant man. In a moment of tension, he tells June to come with him to see caged women who are soon to be sent to the colonies. He gives June the opportunity to pick five women out of the large group that she thinks would be fit to be Martha’s. At first she refuses, but then she goes through each of their profiles and handpicks ones that she believes will be beneficial to the resistance: an engineer, an IT tech, a lawyer, a journalist, and a thief. Good one, June.

#4 – Aunt Lydia is Alive

Perhaps the most jaw dropping moment of these first three episodes is when Aunt Lydia’s sinister face reappears on the screen. If you were next to me you would have heard me say “She’s Alive?!” At the conclusion of season 2, Emily stabbed Aunt Lydia and kicks her down the steps of Commander Lawrence’s home, making us all think she was dead the whole time. Nope! And she’s still her awful, evil self. Why is she still alive?

#3 – June Joins The Martha’s Resistance

We already knew Commander Lawrence had good elements to him, as he played a large role in helping Emily and baby Nicole escape Gilead. As June continues to live under his roof, she learns that the Marthas in his home are a network of resistance leaders and June is more than excited to join their team.

#2 – Serena Burns Down The Waterford House

Serena’s sacrificial choice to let her baby (aka June’s baby) go to be free is taking a large toll on her in season 3. Her morals are severely compromised and her ideals and thinking patterns are completely dismantled. Unable to deal with the repercussions of giving away her baby, Serena douses her bedroom with alcohol and flicks her cigarette onto the bed. This is a huge moment of character development for Serena, and it shows that she’s ready to dismantle the idealistic world she created.

#1 – Emily And Baby Nicole Actually Escape

1.	Emily and Baby Nicole Actually Escape
via Hulu

Season 2 of the Handmaid’s Tale left the audience with a lot of questions and plenty of anxiety surrounding the outcome of Emily’s (formerly OfJoseph) and June’s newborn baby, Nicole’s escape from Gilead. With the help of Martha’s and Commander Lawrence, Emily and Nicole successfully make it to Canada, but not without a fight. With helicopters circling the border, Emily is forced to run hastily through the forest and swim through strong waters before making it to Canada. The terrifying moment of this scene is when the audience first thinks she’s been caught by guardians, when she in fact is rescued by Canadian police. Talk about jaw dropping!

Stay tuned for the remainder of season 3 to see more “top 5” moments from me!
