When we were little and watched princess movies all we absorbed was the princess falling in love with the prince, the songs, the pretty dresses, and the story, but now that we’re older we question things that just do not make sense. In the many adaptations of Cinderella, there are some unanswered questions that still have us wondering to this day. Read the top 5 unanswered questions we are most curious about.
Most people know the story of Cinderella. A girl who is an orphan, lives with her stepmother and step-sisters and is treated poorly by them. One day when a letter shows up that the prince is throwing a ball to find a wife for every eligible woman, Lady Tremaine doesn’t believe that includes Cinderella. Cinderella’s fairy godmother shows up, transforms her look, uses magic to get her there, and sends her off to the ball. Cinderella meets the Prince and the rest is history.
Cinderella Unanswered Questions #5 – Why did only the mice talk to Cinderella? And why were they the only animals who could talk?
No one questioned why Cinderella was talking to mice, and mice in clothes for that matter. Her dog, Bruno, her stepmother’s cat, Lucifer, the horses and other animals did not talk or if they did, we didn’t see it. Was Cinderella going crazy? Did she not have any friends that she reverted talking to mice?
In the live-action version, the mice did not talk or wear clothes, but she still talked to them like they could.
Cinderella Unanswered Questions #4 – How did Cinderella’s dad fall in love with Lady Tremaine? And why?
Apparently, Cinderella’s mother died when she was fairly young (another plot hole we don’t have an answer to) and he marries Lady Tremaine. She was not a very pleasant woman, so how did her father marry her? Did he feel bad because she was a widow with two young children? What happen to her first husband? Did Cinderella not have any more family to stay with besides them? We may never know.
Cinderella Unanswered Questions #3 – What is the prince’s name?
Yeah, we refer to him as Prince Charming, but all throughout the movie, he is referred to as ‘the prince.’ Not once do we get a first name. Even when Cinderella is leaving the ball and he says, “Wait, I didn’t get your name” don’t you think their names would have been the first thing they said to each other? We don’t even know how they fell in love with each other, besides looks because they barely talked.
In the 2015 live version, the prince told Cinderella his name was Kit, but that also could have been a cover up because he didn’t want her to know he was the prince.
#2 – Does no one else have the same shoe size as Cinderella?
Unlike her evil stepsisters, it looked like she had a normal shoe size. You mean to tell me no one else in the entire kingdom had the same shoe size as Cinderella? The Prince didn’t question that? I know the shoes were magical (another reason they didn’t disappear at midnight with the rest of the spell) but the prince didn’t know that. It wasn’t a very smart plan on the palace’s end.
Also, why didn’t the prince just go to every house and look at the women’s faces and say “no, that’s not her.”
#1 – How does no one recognize Cinderella at the ball?
Ok, in the live-action version, the fairy godmother explains that she put a spell on Cinderella that will make her look unrecognizable, but in the original Disney version, no explanation is given. She looks exactly the same, just in a fancy gown. You don’t leave this unanswered. It just doesn’t make sense.
I’m sorry if this ruined the magic and movie for you, but as I’ve gotten older (and yes, I still watch Disney Princess movies) and watch these movies, I find more and more things that have me questioning plot lines.
There are so many more that we wonder about and not just with Cinderella. These unanswered questions are what is keeping me up at night.
