Very few video games have a lasting impact more than the original Mortal Kombat game from 1992. Originally in arcades, it found a new life on home gaming systems though many thought the game was too violent for kids. The success of the original game spawned many sequels for just about every game system since then and back stories were written for characters with every game. A monk from the White Lotus society. Although not as powerful as some of the others he is oftentimes portrayed as the ultimate winner of the Mortal Kombat tournament. Often portrayed as the ultimate good guy of the game and a big hero in most the follow up games of the series. In the original game, he was shown to be less violent than many of the other characters but starting with Mortal Kombat II, he was just as violent and deadly as anyone.
A member of the special forces unit that was looking into the event of the Outworld known as OIA (Outworld Investigation Agency). Often portrayed as stubborn and prideful she is the enemy of Black Dragon leader Kano who represents all that she is not. After chasing him onto the island where the Mortal Kombat tournament was held, her unit was killes. She being the only survivor, she takes part in the tournament.
A powerful member of the Lin Kuei ninja clan with the power to control ice and freeze opponents that he faced. He was a cold-blooded ninja assassin before being killed by Scorpion and reborn as Noob Saibot for much of the rest of the series while his younger brother assumed the mantle of Sub Zero. While he has served under multiple masters in the games, his only real allegiance is to himself.
A Shirai Ryu ninja assassin who joined the clan to provide for his family originally. He was killed in action but resurrected as a spirit bent on getting revenge for his murder. Often seen as a bitter rival to the Lin Kuei ninja clan he was a sworn enemy to Sub Zero but Sub Zero. Often seen as an anti-hero for his struggles and quest to avenge what has happened to him.
A stop motion created monster that was tough for players to fight. The giant four-armed Shokan warrior who serves as chief underling to Shang Tsung was undefeated for 500 years in the tournaments and had been the reigning champion for 9 generations of combat. He appears in most games either as a difficult opponent to beat or as a playable character.
