March is Women’s History Month. The U.S. government declared March every year as this celebration. It highlights the contributions of women in history and contemporary society. The celebration started in 1982 when congress passed Pub. L.97-28, which allowed the president to proclaim the week of March 7th as Women’s History Week.
Here are the top 5 ways you can celebrate this month.
Learn the History of It
Without knowing the history or origins of something, you might wonder why something is celebrated. Pick up a book, preferably written by a woman, or browse the internet and figure out when and why Women’s History Month started. According to the official website, “these proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.”
Support Women-owned businesses / nonprofits / authors / etc.
When you shop at a business owned by women, whether it is a small company, such as an Etsy shop or mom and pop shop, or a big major corporation, you are supporting women and their ways of making a living. If you buy a book written by a woman or support a nonprofit founded by a woman that all goes into women supporting women and you are making a change in this world.
Mentor a girl or fellow woman
Whether it is at a job, a hobby, or life in general, it is always great to mentor a fellow woman and teach them about everything they are capable of doing and will accomplish because they are a woman. This can be done through the big sister program or just meeting for weekly coffee, etc. Mentoring girls has shown positive outcomes in academic and growing in self-confidence and self-esteem.
Write a note to a woman who inspires you
It doesn’t matter if that woman is the Vice President of the United States, a celebrity you look up to, your grandmom, or your best friend, let the women in your life who inspire you know that they inspire you. Writing a letter can really impact someone’s life in a positive way and it might even encourage them to help you in life and/or someone else.
This can be shown by writing yourself a letter, writing down your goals, giving yourself some mental health time, retail therapy, or whatever makes you happy. If you love yourself first, you’ll be able to show other women love and inspire them to believe in themselves and love themselves. Put yourself first and never stop believing that you can achieve anything.
