Throughout the years, many animated studios have released movies that did not perform in the box office as well as they projected. Even if a movie didn’t perform as the studio wanted, many fans still love certain movies that were released. Though these movies may not have a huge following, they are still great films based on their writing and animation. We have created a list of the top five underrated animated movies to watch.
Underrated Animated Movies #5 – Treasure Planet
Treasure Planet released in 2002 is an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s book Treasure Island. This movie follows a 15-year-old boy, named Jim, as he journeys across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a space ship. This movie is full of adventure as we watch Jim find his true self and the search for the galaxy’s best treasure.
Underrated Animated Movies #4 – Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Released 2001, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is the classic story about the city under the ocean with a new twist. This movie follows Milo, who is a young inexperienced adventurer, who dreams of finishing the quest his family started with finding the Lost Empire of Atlantis. Though Milo’s intentions of finding the city are pure, not everyone on the expedition has the same goals as Milo.
#3 – The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant was released in 1999 and did not perform well in the box office. Though it wasn’t a hit, this movie is now a cult classic. The film follows a young boy named, Hogarth, who discovers a robot. Hogarth quickly forms a friendship with the Iron Giant, but a government agent is determined to end the robot. Can Hogarth save his friend or will the government agent destroy the robot?
#2 – ParaNorman
Released in 2012, ParaNorman follows 11-year-old Norman who has a special talent where he can speak to the dead. Norman now has to save his town from a witch’s curse, all while his parents grounded him. Only Norman and his friends can save the town from zombies, but can he do it before he’s parents find out he left the house?

The Road to El Dorado is a cult classic that was released in 2000. This movie follows two con artists after they get a hold of a map to the lost City Of Gold, El Dorado. Now, these two men find themselves in the eyes of El Dorado citizens as gods, but nothing is as good as it seems. With a high priest wanting to destroy the gods and a Spanish explorer looking for the city too, only the two con artists can make things right again for El Dorado.
