The Oscars just passed on Sunday, April 25th and many fans were scratching their heads wondering why those particular movies were nominated. Mostly because many people had not heard of them before. And it was not just this past year. Many times, in the past, the films that get nominated are not the popular ones or even in the box office.
Not to discredit any film that has been nominated or won, but some of the popular movies should have at least earned a nomination.
Here are the top 5 movies that should have been nominated for Best Picture.
“Harry Potter”
“Harry Potter,” one of the biggest and most popular movie franchises of all-time was never nominated for Best Picture, which is hard to believe. 8 films and not one nomination for Best Picture. The franchise has only been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, which they did not win. The only Oscar the Harry Potter world took home was in 2017 for its prequel film, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” It was nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, winning the latter.
“Dirty Dancing”
Although the beloved 80s movie took home the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song, it was not nominated for Best Picture. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is still a beloved song to this day, but so is the movie. Patrick Swayze, who played Johnny Castle in the film, was the heartthrob of the 80s and it is a shock this movie or him were not even nominated.
“Toy Story”
One of the most beloved Disney Pixar films of all-time, “Toy Story,” was not nominated for Best Picture. It did score nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, Best Original Song for “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” and won the award for Special Achievement. However, it’s sequel, “Toy Story 3” was nominated for Best Picture but did not win. That is only the third Disney movie to be nominated for Best Picture.
“Jurassic Park”
“Welcome to Jurassic Park!” The movie, which has sparked numerous sequels was not nominated for Best Picture, despite it being a cult classic and one of the best movies of our time. It did however win for all three categories it was up for including Best Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing. It was a movie about bringing dinosaurs back to life, how did it not score a Best Picture nomination?
“Love Simon”
“Love Simon” was never nominated for any Academy Award. The movie was about a kid in high school who was too afraid to come out and starts emailing someone who is also gay, but not fully out. It is the perfect film for today’s world and “Love Simon” received strong reviews and many people have made a case for why it should have been nominated, since many LGBTQ+ films have not only been nominated, but have won Best Picture, including “Moonlight.”
We guess the Academy just doesn’t like mainstream media. Which movie do you think deserved to be nominated for Best Picture?
