Katy Perry is back with her new album, “Smile.” This is the follow-up to 2017’s “Witness.” Perry described this album as her “journey towards the light, with stories of resilience, hope, and love.”
The album contains previously released stand-alone singles, album singles, and seven other original songs. The official track list is as follows:
“Never Really Over”
“Cry About It Later’
“Teary Eyes”
“Daisies”
“Resilient”
“Not The End of the World”
“Smile”
“Champagne Problems”
“Tucked”
“Harleys in Hawaii”
“Only Love”
“What Makes a Woman”
Fan editions and deluxe versions supposedly include songs “Never Worn White” and “High on Your Supply.”
Now, since Perry released her debut studio album in 2008, she has been topping charts and making songs with lyrics that will live on in music history. Here are our 5 top favorite lyrics from “Smile.”
“No one knows where my mind goes. I keep you on the low, I must confess. You’re someone that I should forget.” – Tucked
Arguably the best song on the album, “Tucked” talks about keeping someone tucked deep inside your head. This lyric is relatable in the sense that there are people in your life you should forget but they are tucked deep in our heads, even though you shouldn’t. Sometimes there is a person you don’t want anyone to know about, you want to keep them all to yourself and that is exactly what this song is talking about. They live in your mind rent free.
“Is it the way we keep the whole world turning in a pair of heels? Yeah, that’s what makes a woman.” – What Makes a Woman (EXPLICIT)
Perry had said this may be one of her favorite songs on the album because she dedicated it to her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. The song talks about how unique women are because you could spend your whole life trying to describe them but never figure it out. This lyric ends the song and basically says that even with high heels on women can do anything and keep the world going. Without them, the world would be nothing.
“If I had one day left to live And if the stars went out on me, the truth is Yeah, there’s so much I’d say and do If I had nothing to lose, no, nothing to lose.” – Only Love
This song really makes you think about your life and this crazy time we’re living in. So many people are angry and worry about small things, but really, we should be focusing on love and what we would do if we only had one day left to live. This pre-chorus may be one of the best and emotional lyrics on her album. When you are gone from this life, you just want to be remembered for your love.
“I died every winter but survived all the weather. Look at me now, look at me now, I’m in full bloom.” – Resilient
This song is actually sad if you really listen to the lyrics to it. But Perry proves she is resilient when times get tough. She comes back stronger. This lyric also references the name of her fiancee Orlando Bloom, when she says, ‘in full bloom.’ The whole song talks about a flower growing and moving past the weeds. It sort of sounds like a song that would be on “Witness.”
“Rejection can be God’s protection.”- Smile
There are a lot of great lyrics in this song, but this one sticks out like a sore thumb. Sometimes, you can get rejected over and over again, whether it is with jobs, or relationships, etc. and you’re not sure why. God may be protecting you from something that he sees is not right for you and is saving something for you that is meant to be. If you’ve been going through a hard time, definitely listen to this song.
